November 3, 2026 — IndiGo (6E) CEO Willie Walsh says the new Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMI) offers major room for the airline’s international and long-haul growth, as IndiGo prepares to move a block of international flights there from Mumbai.

Airline: IndiGo (6E) · Country: India

What happened

IndiGo and airport operator Adani Airport Holdings announced on October 25 that they were finalising plans for international flights from Navi Mumbai starting in February 2027. IndiGo plans to move 12 daily international departures from Mumbai to NMI in stages between February and July 2027. Some domestic flights will also move so passengers can connect.

Mumbai’s airport operator wants airlines to shift some international services to Navi Mumbai before Terminal 1 at Mumbai is rebuilt, work expected to run from 2027 to 2030. Airlines were asked to submit transition plans by today, November 3, for the summer 2027 schedule. Lufthansa, Singapore Airlines and Emirates have raised concerns about the new airport’s readiness, slots and operations. Walsh, speaking on November 2, said IndiGo will decide based on its own needs, not other carriers’ objections.

IndiGo expects its first Airbus A350s in the second quarter of 2028. Until then it plans to use A320 and A321 aircraft, including the A321XLR, for flights to Asia, Africa and Europe. The airline runs more than 2,100 daily flights with over 400 aircraft.

What it means for travelers

  • Check the airport, not just the city. From February 2027, IndiGo flights to the Gulf, Dhaka and Jakarta may leave from Navi Mumbai rather than Mumbai. Confirm which airport before you book.
  • Connections across town: If you are connecting from another airline at Mumbai to one of the IndiGo flights moving to NMI, you would need to change airports. Leave plenty of time.
  • Nothing changes yet. The moves start in February 2027 and are still being finalised. Final schedules are TBA.
