November 1, 2026 — Southwest Airlines (WN) is aiming to put the Boeing 737 MAX 7 into passenger service in March 2027, according to an internal rollout plan reported by View from the Wing on October 31. The airline has marked that date as subject to change.
Airline: Southwest Airlines (WN) · Country: United States
What happened
The reported plan has Southwest taking its first MAX 7 deliveries in mid-to-late December 2026 from a batch of 27 aircraft that Boeing has already built. Newly built MAX 7s would follow from February 2027. Before entering service, each of the already-built jets is to get at least five flights, including a simulated extended-overwater flight of more than 3.5 hours. Aircraft preparation work is planned at Paine Field, Phoenix and Kansas City.
The FAA certified the MAX 7 on August 3, 2026, but Southwest still needs its own operating approvals before revenue flying can begin.
| Item | Reported plan |
|---|---|
| First deliveries | Mid-to-late December 2026 (27 prebuilt aircraft) |
| Newly built deliveries | From February 2027 |
| First passenger flights | March 2027 (subject to change); exact date TBA |
| Seats | 150 Recaro seats |
| Cabin features | Starlink Wi-Fi, in-seat power, larger overhead bins, three lavatories, secondary flight-deck barrier |
The 150-seat layout is slightly more than the 148 seats Southwest showed in a 2024 investor presentation. Swapping a 137-seat 737-700 for a 150-seat MAX 7 adds 13 seats per flight, roughly 9.5% more. Southwest had 271 737-700s on September 30, averaging about 20 years old. In an August interview, COO Andrew Watterson said the first 27 MAX 7s would take over the extended-overwater flying now done by 28 older 737-800s.
What it means for travelers
- A few more seats per departure. Where a MAX 7 replaces a 737-700, there are 13 extra seats on each flight. That means a little more seat availability once the jets start flying, likely from March 2027 at the earliest.
- Overwater routes first. The first MAX 7s are slated to take over extended-overwater flying from 737-800s. Seat counts on those routes may change when the aircraft type changes, so check seat maps once the swap happens.
- Nothing changes yet. No schedules have been published and the March 2027 date is not final, so there is no effect on current bookings.
