TORONTO, Canada — October 21, 2026 — A smoke report forced the evacuation of the apron management tower at Toronto Pearson International Airport on Tuesday evening, October 20. Traffic-flow restrictions that followed held up arrivals and departures overnight before the airport said operations had resumed at 6:08 a.m. Wednesday.

What happened

  • Evacuation: On the evening of October 20, staff evacuated the apron management unit tower after smoke was reported. That tower is run by the Greater Toronto Airports Authority (GTAA) and directs aircraft around the gates and loading areas.
  • Cause: The airport said smoke was “observed coming from a piece of equipment.” No further cause has been released.
  • NAV CANADA tower not affected: NAV CANADA said its air traffic control tower was not evacuated and kept working normally, and pilot-controller communications were not affected.
  • Delays: Staff returned to the apron tower that evening, but air traffic management initiatives stayed in place and slowed flights. One passenger said he was told 35 to 40 aircraft were ahead of his. No official count of delayed or cancelled flights has been published.
  • Back to normal: At 6:08 a.m. on Wednesday, October 21, the airport said the initiatives had ended and operations had resumed.

Shortly after 10 p.m., October 20 Officials confirm the evacuation; flow restrictions in place
Later on October 20 Staff return to the tower; restrictions remain
6:08 a.m., October 21 Airport says initiatives have ended and operations have resumed

Air Canada described the event as a safety incident involving the GTAA’s apron unit and said it was “outside of Air Canada’s control.”

What it means for travelers

  • Wednesday morning flights may be fuller than usual. Passengers whose Tuesday night flights were badly delayed or missed connections will have been rebooked onto Wednesday departures, so seats will be tight early in the day.
  • Watch aircraft and crew positioning. Overnight delays can leave aircraft and crews out of position, so some early Wednesday flights may run late even though the airport is back to normal.
  • Check your flight before leaving. Operations resumed at 6:08 a.m., but confirm your specific flight’s status before heading to Pearson.
  • Normal operations should be back for later flights. With NAV CANADA’s tower unaffected and the restrictions lifted, later departures should run normally unless something new happens.
