October 17, 2026 — Mexico has upgraded its coastal alerts for Hurricane Trudy to a hurricane warning from Manzanillo to Cabo Corrientes, and Puerto Vallarta is now under a tropical storm warning. Trudy did not become the major hurricane forecast earlier in the week, but it is expected to pass close to the coast of west-central Mexico from Saturday into Sunday with heavy rain, flooding and dangerous surf.

What’s new since yesterday

  • Strength: Trudy weakened from Category 3 on Friday and was a Category 1 hurricane on Saturday morning. The US National Hurricane Center’s public advisory 16A (6 a.m. CST, Saturday) put maximum sustained winds at 90 mph, moving northwest at 8 mph. AP reports forecasters said it could still strengthen during Saturday; Reuters reports it is expected to weaken on Sunday.
  • Hurricane warning: Manzanillo (Colima) north to Cabo Corrientes (Jalisco). Hurricane conditions are expected in the warning area on Saturday night, with tropical storm conditions spreading across the region during the day Saturday.
  • Puerto Vallarta: Now under a tropical storm warning covering the coast from north of Cabo Corrientes to Punta Mita, with tropical storm conditions expected Saturday, according to Vallarta Daily. A tropical storm watch runs from Punta Mita to San Blas, and the Islas Marías are also under a watch.
  • Timing: The center is expected to approach the coast later Saturday and pass near it overnight into Sunday. Landfall has not been forecast (TBA).
  • Rain: 4 to 8 inches in Michoacán, Colima and Jalisco through the weekend, with isolated totals around 15 inches, bringing a risk of life-threatening flooding and landslides. Guerrero and Nayarit could see 2 to 4 inches, locally about 6 inches.
  • Coast: Storm surge may cause coastal flooding where winds blow onshore, and swells are producing life-threatening surf and rip currents along the southwestern and west-central coast.
  • Airports and ports: No airport or port closures had been reported in the sources checked (TBA). Colima state says its risk is currently low, but ground already soaked by earlier storms raises the danger from more rain.

What it means for travelers

  • Already on the coast? If your flight is still operating Saturday, consider leaving before conditions worsen Saturday night.
  • Heavy rain could flood roads to and from the airports. Check your flight status before you leave and allow extra time.
  • Follow the NHC (nhc.noaa.gov) and Mexican civil protection orders, and stay out of the sea along the Pacific coast through the weekend.
  • US citizens can register with STEP and Canadians with Registration of Canadians Abroad to receive emergency messages. Check whether your travel insurance covers weather delays and extra hotel nights.
