October 28, 2026 — Update: More details have emerged about the shutdown of Villa Vie Residences’ Villa Vie Odyssey in Cambodia. A Cambodian official says more than 200 guests were ordered off the ship at Sihanoukville with seven hours’ notice, and many now have nowhere to live.

What’s new

We reported on October 27 that Villa Vie had laid up its residential cruise ship over fuel costs. Since then:

  • Long Dimanche, a Cambodian provincial official, said 203 guests and 156 crew had boarded in Thailand on October 23, bound for Vietnam, before the ship stopped at Sihanoukville port.
  • Passengers were given seven hours to leave the ship. The official said the sudden order left many retirees and remote workers with nowhere to live.
  • According to ABC News (Australia), the ship was due to refuel and depart on October 31. Where it goes next is TBA.
  • Some residents flew out; others stayed in Sihanoukville. Passenger Randy Cassingham told the ABC the company had done “absolutely nothing to help.”
  • ABC described the company as having gone bust. Villa Vie’s own statement says it has suspended operations and will spend the next 60 days evaluating restructuring and recapitalization; gCaptain reported no bankruptcy filing.

Background

Villa Vie says monthly fuel cost per cabin jumped from about $1,800 to $6,000–$8,000 in parts of Asia, which it ties to the Iran conflict, and that it cannot pass increases of that size on to residents. The ship stays in layup with crew aboard. There is no timetable for resuming operations, and the company says “no outcome is assured.” Refunds and the status of residents’ cabin purchases have not been addressed publicly (TBA). The Bahamas-flagged ship left Belfast in October 2024.

What it means for travelers

  • If you or family members were aboard: Sihanoukville is a long way from most long-haul gateways; residents heading home generally need to connect via Phnom Penh, Bangkok or another regional hub. Book onward flights early, since many displaced residents are trying to leave at once.
  • Keep records of every flight and hotel cost — refunds and compensation have not been announced.
  • Anyone considering a long-term residential cruise should note that this operator ended service with only hours of notice.
