PortMiami Traffic Backups: Why Getting to Your Ship Takes Longer This Season and How to Beat Them

October 23, 2026 — Long traffic backups at PortMiami are caused by its layout, and they will not go away soon: a single road links Dodge Island to the mainland, and more passengers than ever are coming through.

Why traffic is slow

PortMiami sits on Dodge Island, which it shares with cargo operations, and one road is the only way in and out. On busy days that road is quickly “inundated with cars, buses, and shuttles.” The port expects 10 million cruise passengers in 2026, up from 8.5 million in 2025. The 2026–2027 season includes 81 days when seven to ten ships are in port at once. Royal Caribbean homeports its biggest ships here, including Icon of the Seas, and Hero of the Seas will be based in Miami in 2027.

The port’s plan

  • Terminals AA, A, B, C and D use the PortMiami Tunnel. Terminals E, F, G, J and V use the PortMiami Bridge.
  • GridMatrix AI technology will monitor traffic and flag backups.
  • Police will direct traffic around Biscayne Boulevard and downtown on busy days.
  • Miami plans to test free transfers to the airport. A rail link from the airport to the port is not expected until 2050.

Royal Caribbean’s free airport shuttle is only for Icon of the Seas guests on selected dates, who are told by email. It runs only between the airport and the port, and guests who arrive a day or more early can’t use it.

What it means for travelers

  • Backups last all day, so arriving later won’t avoid them. Get the earliest check-in time you can and stick to it.
  • Fly into Miami the day before your cruise. Morning-of-sailing flights leave too little room for a delay plus a slow drive onto the island.
  • Check which terminal your ship uses. The tunnel serves AA–D and the bridge serves E, F, G, J and V, which helps your driver pick the right approach.
  • On disembarkation day, the Royal Caribbean Blog writer suggests a taxi rather than a ride-share, because taxis are already waiting at the terminal. Book a later flight out of MIA or FLL to allow for the traffic.
