SYDNEY, Australia — October 19, 2026. Sydney’s second airport, Western Sydney International (WSI), takes its first passenger flight on Sunday, October 25. It opens with very few flights, though, and only a handful of airlines have committed to it in the first year.

What’s happening

  • Opening day: The first passenger flight is a Jetstar Airbus A320 to the Gold Coast at 11 a.m. on Sunday, October 25, 2026.
  • No curfew: WSI is designed to operate around the clock. Sydney Kingsford Smith (SYD) restricts aircraft movements between 11 p.m. and 6 a.m.
  • Very light schedule: A Cirium schedule review cited by Aviation A2Z found no more than six scheduled passenger flights a day over the 12 months it covered. Qantas plans only slightly more than one domestic flight a day on average from March to September 2027. WSI’s chief executive, Simon Hickey, told locals: “It’s use it or lose it.”

Airlines and launch dates

Airline Route Start date
Jetstar Gold Coast; Melbourne and Brisbane also planned October 25, 2026 (Gold Coast); others TBA
Air New Zealand Auckland October 26, 2026
Singapore Airlines Singapore (daily) November 23, 2026
Vietjet Air Ho Chi Minh City Expected January 2027
Fiji Airways Nadi (3 weekly) March 19, 2027
Qantas Domestic (about one flight a day on average) TBA (schedule shows flights from March to September 2027)

Virgin Australia had no WSI flights in the schedule reviewed and is still deciding whether the airport fits its network.

Getting there

  • No train at opening. The Sydney Metro Western Sydney Airport line is targeted for 2027 but could slip to 2028.
  • Free WSI Link bus to St Marys station every 30 minutes, about a 30-minute ride.
  • Local buses serve Mount Druitt, Penrith, Liverpool, Campbelltown and Leppington.
  • Super Shuttle WSI to central Sydney: launch fare A$55 one way, about an hour.

What it means for travelers

  • Few options, so plan carefully. With at most about six flights a day, a missed flight at WSI may mean waiting until the next day. Have a backup plan through Sydney Kingsford Smith.
  • International options grow slowly. Air New Zealand to Auckland from October 26 and Singapore Airlines daily to Singapore from November 23 are the first international links, so in the first weeks most international trips will still need to go through SYD.
  • Allow time for ground transport. There is no rail link yet, so moving between WSI and SYD or the city takes a bus or shuttle. Build that into any connection.
  • Late-night arrivals: Because WSI has no curfew, it may be useful for late flights that SYD’s 11 p.m.–6 a.m. restrictions don’t allow, once airlines schedule them.
