October 17, 2026 — PortMiami expects seven to ten cruise ships in port at the same time on 81 days during its 2026-27 season, and Miami-Dade County has announced a traffic plan to cope. It includes a free airport shuttle pilot for Carnival Celebration guests, AI traffic monitoring and police on the busiest days.
The traffic plan
- Use the right entrance: Terminals AA, A, B, C and D are reached through the PortMiami Tunnel; Terminals E, F, G, J and V through the PortMiami Bridge.
- Arrive at your assigned time: the port will release videos titled “Arrive at Your Embarkation Time” and “Choosing the Right Entrance.” Release date: TBA.
- Free airport shuttle pilot: complimentary transfers to Miami International Airport for Carnival Celebration guests on select dates, starting in October 2026. Specific dates: TBA.
- Royal Caribbean shuttle continues: free airport transfers for Icon of the Seas guests stay in place.
- AI monitoring: the port is working with GridMatrix to predict and ease bottlenecks.
- Police: the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office and City of Miami Police will direct traffic on particularly busy days, focusing on Biscayne Boulevard and surrounding downtown streets.
- Cargo routes: designated cargo roadways will keep trucks off downtown streets and I-395 on busy cruise days.
The busy season
December will be among the busiest months, with nine or ten ships in port at once on more than ten days, and weekends will bring the most passengers. Big ships include Icon of the Seas (5,610 guests) and MSC World America (5,400). Season start and end dates were not published.
| Ship | What’s new at Miami | When |
|---|---|---|
| Margaritaville at Sea (new ship) | Global debut, homeporting | January 2027 |
| Carnival Firenze | Seasonal program after moving from the West Coast | February to mid-May 2027 |
| Norwegian Aura | Debut | June 2027 |
| Hero of the Seas (Royal Caribbean) | Arrival | August 2027 |
Maiden calls in 2026-27 include Ponant’s L’Austral, Explora III, Orient Express’ OE Corinthian, Ritz-Carlton’s Ilma, Emerald Sakara, Four Seasons I and several Silversea ships.
What it means for travelers
- Fly in the day before, especially for a weekend or December sailing, when flights into MIA and FLL will be full of cruise passengers.
- Do not show up at the pier early. The port is asking everyone to arrive at their assigned embarkation time; build your hotel checkout and ride around that time.
- Check your terminal letter and tell your driver whether to take the Tunnel or the Bridge.
- Sailing on Carnival Celebration or Icon of the Seas? Ask the line whether your date qualifies for a free shuttle to MIA; it could save a taxi or rideshare fare on disembarkation day.
- Leave plenty of time for afternoon flights home on days with seven or more ships, when downtown traffic will be heavy.
