October 3, 2026 — Intercity bus operators in Honduras began a stoppage over fuel prices at 4:00 a.m. on Friday, October 2. It was announced as indefinite but turned out partial and regional. Operators warned it would spread to more departments in the coming days if the government does not negotiate.
The details
- Who: a group calling itself Transportistas Interurbanos Unidos de Honduras. The larger association ATIH, with about 3,000 buses, did not join and is still in talks.
- Where: bus routes stopped in Cortés (including Villanueva, Potrerillos and the Chamelecón entrance to San Pedro Sula) and in Lempira (Gracias). Actions were also reported on the CA-5 highway at Comayagua, in Santa Bárbara, near Santa Rosa de Copán and in Olancho.
- Roads: private cars and trucks moved fairly normally in some areas, with police on the CA-5.
- Airports: no source we read mentions airport access.
- Status on October 3: not confirmed. In Villanueva the action was expected to end around 5:00 p.m. Friday.
- Why: talks on October 1 ended without a deal. Operators want fuel taxes suspended to year-end.
- Holiday timing: this falls in the Semana Morazánica holiday week. ATIH said it would not strike during the holiday but warned of possible action afterward.
What it means for airline travelers
- Ground transport: do not count on intercity buses in northern and western Honduras. Book a private transfer with your hotel.
- San Pedro Sula: the affected routes are in the same department as the airport. Leave early in case of roadblocks.
- Roatán and the Bay Islands: if you connect by bus to the La Ceiba ferry, confirm the bus is running before you fly in.
- After the holiday: watch for a wider stoppage. Dates are TBA.
