November 4, 2026 — JetBlue has lifted checked-bag fees again, this time for trips booked from November 3, while fresh coverage of its finances has revived talk that the New York carrier could become an acquisition target.

Airline: JetBlue Airways (B6) · United States

What happened

JetBlue is raising checked-bag fees for the second time in 2026, pointing to higher fuel and operating costs. The new prices apply to flights booked on or after November 3, 2026; trips booked earlier, including holiday travel, keep the old fees. The change covers Blue, Blue Basic, Blue Extra and EvenMore bookings within the U.S., Latin America, the Caribbean and Canada.

Checked bag Old fee (prepaid / at airport) New fee (prepaid / at airport)
1st bag, off-peak $39 / $49 $50 / $60
1st bag, peak $49 / $59 $55 / $70
2nd bag, off-peak $59 / $69 $70 / $75
2nd bag, peak $69 / $79 $75 / $85

JetBlue prices bags dynamically, with peak-day pricing set through October 2027; the exact peak dates are TBA in the published coverage. Free-bag benefits are unchanged for Mint customers, buyers of the new domestic first-class (BlueFirst) seats, certain co-branded cardholders and Mosaic members. Full-size carry-ons remain allowed on every fare, including Blue Basic. The Points Guy notes that after JetBlue’s March increase most large U.S. airlines followed within weeks; whether rivals match this time is not yet known.

Takeover speculation returns

TravelMole reported on November 3 that JetBlue could become a takeover target, recalling a March Semafor report that the airline had hired advisers to examine strategic options. United, Alaska and Southwest have been named as possible partners, but no offer or merger agreement has been announced and it is unclear whether any talks have taken place. Citing Reuters, the report says JetBlue’s creditors have retained restructuring advisers; the airline carries about $8.4 billion in debt and lease liabilities.

CEO Joanna Geraghty said on October 27 that JetBlue was not negotiating with creditors, restructuring debt or seeking government help. Third-quarter figures show a net loss of $257 million (versus $60 million a year earlier) on revenue up 21% to $2.8 billion, with cash and investments at $1.6 billion. JetBlue says it has enough liquidity for at least 12 months, and its JetForward plan targets an operating profit in 2027 and positive free cash flow in 2028.

What it means for travelers

  • Higher checked-bag prices and free full-size carry-ons on every fare are likely to push more customers into the overhead bins. Pack light and expect to gate-check if you board late.
  • The fee that applies is set by your booking date. JetBlue trips booked before November 3 keep the old bag prices.
