November 2, 2026 — Youth-led protests over living costs and military service turned violent in Germany on Saturday, October 31, with looting in central Frankfurt and clashes in several other cities. Officials condemned the violence. No new protest dates had been announced in the reports we found.

What happened

  • Where: Demonstrations organized under the banner “Gen Z regelt” (“Gen Z takes charge”) took place in more than 30 cities, including Berlin, Cologne and Munich. The worst violence was in Frankfurt and Hamburg.
  • Frankfurt: Police said more than 100 officers were injured. 17 shops were damaged and five looted, and 54 people were taken into custody. Police used water cannon to put out fires.
  • Why: Protesters oppose compulsory military service and want more investment in education amid rising prices, according to reports cited by ANI.
  • Officials: Hesse’s state premier, Boris Rhein, said those responsible would face consequences. Federal interior minister Alexander Dobrindt was briefed on the nationwide protests on October 31.
  • What’s next: Further protest dates: TBA. Reports describe a wider wave of youth-led protests across Europe, including in France and Portugal.

What it means for travelers

  • No US Embassy alert for Germany and no transport disruption were reported. Frankfurt Airport was not mentioned in coverage of the unrest.
  • If you are in Frankfurt, Hamburg or other big cities, stay away from protests, which can turn violent with little warning, and follow local news and police social media for gatherings.
  • US citizens can enroll in STEP; Canadians can use Registration of Canadians Abroad.
