Update to our October 27 report: the truckers’ strike has been called off.

October 28, 2026 — Mexican trucking groups have ended the nationwide highway protest that began on Monday, October 26. They lifted the blockades after reaching agreements with the Interior Ministry (Gobernación), according to La Jornada.

What changed

  • Protest over: The protest lasted about 34 hours. Leaders of the trucking groups Canacar, Fematrac and Hamotac met Gobernación officials. Canacar says roads have been cleared, and Gobernación says protesters agreed to remove blockades and suspend protests.
  • Agreement: Four permanent working groups will cover highway security, infrastructure, tax issues, social security and working conditions. The transport ministry (SICT), the toll-road operator (Capufe) and the finance ministry (SHCP) will take part.
  • Next meetings: Truckers meet IMSS and the Labor Ministry on Thursday, October 29, and SICT and Capufe on Friday, October 30.
  • New protest dates: None announced. Some highways are still damaged.

What it means for travelers

  • Getting to Mexican airports by road should be back to normal, including the routes to Cancún where blockades made passengers miss flights earlier this week. Still allow a little extra time while traffic and freight backlogs clear.
  • Watch for a restart. The deal depends on the working groups. If talks this week break down, short-notice blockades could return. Check local news before long drives to the airport.
