October 21, 2026 — Riyadh’s King Khalid International Airport handled flights again on Wednesday for the first time since it was shut on October 10 after repeated Houthi attacks, but only a handful of Saudi carriers are flying and only on domestic routes, the Associated Press reported. Several European airlines have already cancelled Riyadh service through mid-November.

What’s new since yesterday

  • Limited reopening: Saudi authorities told airlines on October 19 they could resume operations at Riyadh with prior permission. On October 21 the airport was open for domestic flights, with FlightAware data showing Saudia and Flynas operating, according to AP.
  • Foreign airlines still out: Lufthansa and Air France have cancelled their Riyadh flights through mid-November, AP reported.
  • Ongoing attacks in the region: The Saudi-led coalition said it intercepted five drones fired toward Saudi Arabia over Medina. Separately, a Houthi missile struck a military camp next to the airport in Aden, Yemen, briefly suspending operations there, and a tanker was hit by a projectile off Bukha, Oman, near the Strait of Hormuz.

Official US guidance (security alert of October 20)

  • The US Mission’s October 20 alert, issued before the limited reopening, listed Riyadh’s airport as suspended and said Jeddah (King Abdulaziz International) and Dammam (King Fahd International) were operating with some delays and cancellations.
  • Land crossings, including the King Fahd Causeway to Bahrain, and roads around Riyadh, Jeddah and Dhahran were reported open. Airports in Bahrain, Jordan, Oman, Qatar and the UAE were operating.
  • The embassy suggests train, bus or private car as alternatives and names Saudi Arabia Railways, SAT Transportation and SAPTCO.
  • Saudi Arabia remains at Level 3 (Reconsider Travel) on the State Department scale, citing drone and missile threats from Iran and the Houthis, armed conflict, terrorism, exit bans and social-media laws.
  • The Interior Ministry warns against filming or sharing images of interceptions, impact sites, airports or government buildings; the embassy says US citizens have been detained for this.

What it means for travelers

  • Riyadh is domestic-only for now. Don’t plan an international trip into or out of RUH. Jeddah and Dammam are the realistic gateways, and both have seen delays and cancellations.
  • Expect thin options. With Lufthansa and Air France out until mid-November, there are fewer seats on European connections, so flights to Saudi Arabia are likely to be full. Have a confirmed backup.
  • Know your ground options. The embassy lists Saudi Arabia Railways, SAT Transportation and SAPTCO as alternatives to flying, and the King Fahd Causeway to Bahrain is open if you need a different airport.
  • Don’t take photos of airports, interceptions or damage sites, and turn on cellular broadcast alerts from Saudi Civil Defense.
  • Register with STEP (US) or Registration of Canadians Abroad, and check whether your travel insurance excludes areas under a Level 3 advisory or active conflict.
