October 21, 2026 — Teachers, hospital doctors and civil servants are striking across Greece today, with marches in Athens, Thessaloniki and Patras. Public transport in Athens is mostly running, but some central Metro stations are closed in both Athens and Thessaloniki.

Who is striking

  • Primary and kindergarten teachers: 24-hour nationwide strike called by the DOE union.
  • Secondary teachers: work stoppage from 11:00 to 14:00 (OLME), with local unions urged to add a stoppage from 08:00 to 11:00.
  • Hospital doctors: nationwide strike (OENGE).
  • Civil servants: work stoppage from 11:00 to the end of the working day (ADEDY).

How transport is running today

City / service Status
Athens Metro Lines 2 and 3 Normal timetable; Panepistimio station closed from 10:00
Athens Line 1 (ISAP) No strike announced
Athens buses, trolleys, trams Running; delays or diversions possible in the center
Thessaloniki Metro Dimokratias, Venizelou, Agia Sofia, Syntrivani and Panepistimio closed from 09:00 on police orders; no reopening time given
Trains Check Hellenic Train

Rallies: Athens 12:00 at Propylaia, then a march to Parliament, plus a doctors’ rally outside the Finance Ministry; Thessaloniki 11:30 at the Venizelos statue; Patras 10:30 at Georgiou Square. The report reviewed does not mention ferries or flights.

What it means for travelers

  • Getting to and from Athens airport should be mostly normal, but expect slow traffic around Syntagma and the Parliament area at midday.
  • Avoid the march routes in central Athens and Thessaloniki this afternoon.
  • This is a one-day action. Check Hellenic Train and your ferry operator if you are traveling today.
