October 20, 2026 — An Austrian Airlines flight from Tel Aviv to Vienna diverted to Sofia, Bulgaria, under a fighter jet escort after a bomb threat was phoned in to Vienna Airport. Searches found nothing, and the flight later continued to Vienna.
What happened
Flight OS82, an Airbus A320 (registration OE-LZE according to flight tracking data), was near the Romanian border on October 18 when the crew reported the threat and diverted to Sofia. Bulgarian MiG-29 fighters escorted the jet as part of NATO air policing.
The 51 passengers and six crew members left the aircraft in Sofia while authorities carried out security checks. Austrian Airlines confirmed on October 19 that checks of the aircraft, passengers and crew found nothing, and the aircraft flew on to Vienna with all passengers aboard.
Austria’s Interior Minister Gerhard Karner said the threat was made by phone to Vienna Airport and that an investigation is under way, according to Reuters as cited by AeroTime. No suspect has been named (TBA).
What it means for travelers
- No schedule changes have been announced. Austrian’s Tel Aviv–Vienna service has not been reported as affected.
- Allow extra time on Tel Aviv flights. Threats like this can bring extra security checks. If you are connecting in Vienna onto a separate ticket, leave a generous connection.
