October 18, 2026 — American Airlines’ flight attendant union is objecting to newly mandatory credit card sales training. Separately, an American Eagle jet returned to St. Louis on Saturday after the crew reported an odor in the cabin.

Union pushes back on credit card training

American has added a credit card sales module to the required online training for its more than 30,000 flight attendants, delivered through the Me@Work portal. Not finishing required training can lead to discipline, and reports say the consequences could go as far as dismissal. Pitching the card onboard is still voluntary, and flight attendants who take part earn commissions on approved applications.

In a memo, the Association of Professional Flight Attendants (APFA) said the training falls outside the duties allowed by its contract. The union called contract scope “one of our most important protections” against management redefining the job. APFA has also questioned plans to show each flight attendant’s card sign-up totals in Me@Work, which already tracks customer satisfaction, on-time performance and sick time. None of the reports included a statement from American. A completion deadline for the module is TBA.

American Eagle jet returns to St. Louis

American Eagle flight AA5089, operated by PSA Airlines with Bombardier CRJ900 N574NN, was flying from St. Louis to Philadelphia on Saturday, October 17. It left about two hours late. About 15 minutes after takeoff, passengers reported that the oxygen masks dropped. Flight tracking showed a climb to about 21,000 feet followed by a descent to about 10,000 feet, and the jet landed back in St. Louis at about 8:59 a.m.

American said the crew returned after reporting an odor on board. The aircraft landed safely and was taken out of service for a maintenance inspection. No injuries were reported. Some passengers said travelers left the aircraft onto the wing, but neither American nor the airport has confirmed this. Passengers were rebooked on later flights to Philadelphia that day. The cause is TBA.

What it means for travelers

  • The training dispute is not a disruption risk. It is a contract-scope fight, and nothing in the reports points to schedule impact or job action.
  • St. Louis–Philadelphia: this was a one-off irregular operation. When a flight is pulled, its passengers fill later departures on the same route that day.
