October 10, 2026 — Update: Delta Air Lines has not decided whether its Atlanta–Riyadh route will start on October 23 as planned. Chief executive Ed Bastian said on Friday that safety will decide it. Separately, Delta cancelled more than 20 Saturday flights at Atlanta as the remnants of Hurricane Isaias moved inland.

What happened

What changed since yesterday: on October 9 the Riyadh question was an unconfirmed report. Bastian has now addressed it on the record. Speaking to CNBC on Friday, he said Delta was reviewing the launch and would tell customers its decision soon. “Safety is going to make the call,” he said, as quoted by Benzinga.

The review follows Houthi attacks on Riyadh’s King Khalid International Airport on October 8 that killed three Saudi citizens, among them a Saudia captain, and damaged a Saudia aircraft on the ground.

Employee travel alert. View from the Wing, citing the aviation insider JonNYC, reports that Delta corporate security issued an internal active threat alert advising employees not to travel to Riyadh from October 8 through October 12. Delta has not confirmed the alert publicly.

Lufthansa Group has suspended Riyadh flights through at least October 16. Air India, IndiGo and Akasa Air have also cancelled flights.

Hurricane Isaias

Isaias made landfall near Destin, Florida, at 8:30 p.m. Central on Friday as a Category 2 hurricane and was moving north through Alabama on Saturday. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, citing FlightAware, reported that Delta cancelled more than 20 Saturday flights to or from Atlanta, to Pensacola, Destin, Panama City, Tallahassee, Montgomery, Mobile, Dothan and Columbus, Mississippi. More than 50 Atlanta-area flights were cancelled on Friday.

As of 9 a.m. Saturday, Atlanta News First counted 34 cancellations and 45 delays at Hartsfield-Jackson across all airlines. Delta has a waiver for Saturday flights at Atlanta, in addition to its Gulf Coast waiver for October 9 and 10. Pensacola and Destin–Fort Walton Beach were still closed on Saturday morning; reopening times are TBA.

What it means for travelers

  • Do not plan a trip around the Riyadh launch. The first flights may not operate, and a reported company alert tells employees to stay away through October 12. Wait for Delta’s decision.
  • Check your flight status before traveling to Saudi Arabia on any carrier. Other airlines’ Riyadh flights are being cancelled at short notice.
  • Atlanta flights will be fuller this weekend. Passengers from cancelled Gulf Coast and Alabama flights are being rebooked under two waivers.
  • Skip Pensacola and Destin until they reopen. The first flights back will carry displaced passengers.
