October 8, 2026 — Australia’s Fair Work Commission has cleared Virgin Australia ground and customer service staff to vote on protected industrial action. The ballot closes on October 21, Australian Aviation reports.

What happened

The vote covers Australian Services Union members at Virgin, including airport and guest services staff. The number of employees involved was not published.

If members vote yes, the options include visible protests, bans on particular duties and work stoppages of up to 24 hours. No action dates have been set.

The union says Virgin’s enterprise agreement offer fell well short. According to the report, Virgin proposed nine-hour shifts and cuts to days in lieu. Virgin said it was disappointed and is negotiating in good faith.

The same union’s members at Jetstar began work bans and one-hour stoppages on October 2.

What it means for travelers

  • Nothing changes before October 21. Virgin Australia flights are operating normally.
  • After the ballot, watch for notice of action. Check-in and gate stoppages would affect travellers at the airport.
  • If stoppages are called, avoid tight connections on Virgin Australia and book earlier flights.
  • Travellers should check for an update after October 21 before booking late-October travel within Australia.
