November 4, 2026 — South Africans vote in local government elections today, and the U.S. Embassy in Pretoria has warned that political rallies and demonstrations may take place before and after polling day. In an alert published November 3, the embassy said gatherings could bring road closures and transport delays, noting that recent protests in cities, including protests over immigration, caused similar disruption and some isolated violence.

What the embassy says

  • Where: Nationwide.
  • When: Election day is Wednesday, November 4. Gatherings may continue after the vote; end date TBA.
  • Possible impact: Localized disruption, including road closures and transport delays.
  • Advice: Avoid crowds and demonstrations, keep a low profile, follow local media and review your personal security plans.
  • Advisory level: The embassy lists South Africa at Level 2: Exercise Increased Caution.
