November 5, 2026 — A security officer was killed on Thursday in an attack near the Sri Lankan Embassy in Amman, Jordan’s capital. Jordanian authorities called it a terrorist act. The attacker has been arrested.

What happened

  • The attack: An assailant attacked officers at a guard post near the Sri Lankan Embassy with a sharp object, according to Jordan’s Public Security Directorate, as reported by the Associated Press. One officer was killed. A second officer and the attacker were injured, state-run Al-Mamlaka TV reported.
  • Motive: A preliminary investigation indicated the attacker had planned to target officers of the security directorate. The directorate described it as a “cowardly terrorist attack.” Al-Mamlaka reported the attacker tried to seize the officer’s weapon.
  • Context: AP notes the attack comes weeks after gunmen opened fire at a church funeral in Karak, in southern Jordan, killing nine people.

Advisory status

The U.S. State Department rates Jordan at Level 3: Reconsider Travel (advisory issued October 2026). The U.S. Embassy in Amman had not posted a security alert about this attack on its website when we checked. Its most recent alerts are dated October 8, 18 and 23, 2026.

What it means for travelers

  • Jordan remains open and flights are operating, but the U.S. advises reconsidering travel. Read the full State Department advisory before you go.
  • In Amman, keep away from embassies, police posts and other security sites where possible, and follow instructions from local police.
  • Enroll in STEP (U.S. citizens) or Registration of Canadians Abroad to receive any new alerts.
  • The U.S. Embassy’s 24-hour consular line is +962 6 590-6000; dial 911 for police in Jordan.
  • Check whether your travel insurance covers a destination under a Level 3 advisory.
