PUERTO VALLARTA, Mexico, October 18, 2026 — Hurricane Trudy is moving up Mexico’s Pacific coast, and airports from Manzanillo to Puerto Vallarta are on alert. Puerto Vallarta International (PVR) was operating normally on Saturday afternoon, but local authorities have not ruled out a precautionary shutdown, and WestJet is offering free changes for October 18–19.
What happened
- The storm: At 6 p.m. Central Mexico time on Saturday, October 17, Trudy was a Category 2 hurricane with sustained winds of 155 km/h, about 160 km southwest of Manzanillo, moving northwest at 17 km/h, Infobae reported.
- PVR status: As of 1 p.m. Saturday, airport operator Grupo Aeroportuario del Pacífico reported normal takeoffs and landings, with 60 scheduled arrivals and departures, according to Tribuna de la Bahía. Authorities said a preventive suspension could follow if conditions worsened. Any closure dates: TBA.
- Port closed: The Port Captaincy closed Puerto Vallarta’s port to all navigation from 7 p.m. Saturday.
- Precedent: PVR and Manzanillo (ZLO) both closed for Hurricane Simon from October 10. PVR’s commercial flights resumed October 13 and ZLO’s operations October 12, per DelayGuard.
- Mexico City flights: Grupo Aeroportuario Marina, which runs Mexico City International (MEX), warned that flights to several states, including Colima, Jalisco and Michoacán, could be delayed or cancelled. No confirmed cancellation count was given.
- Other airports on alert: DelayGuard and Nomad Lawyer also flag Manzanillo (ZLO), Acapulco (ACA) and Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo (ZIH) for possible delays; no closures had been reported.
Airline waivers
- WestJet: Flexible changes and cancellations for travel into and out of Puerto Vallarta on October 18 and 19.
- Delta, American, United, Alaska, Southwest: No Trudy waiver found as of early October 17, per DelayGuard. Check your airline’s travel alerts page for any update.
What it means for travelers
- Hold off on Pacific-coast beach trips this weekend. The last closure kept PVR shut for three days.
- Waivers fill the seats. Where airlines let customers move flights for free, flights on the days after the storm tend to fill up.
- Already there? Check your flight status before you leave, and have a backup such as Guadalajara (GDL) in mind if PVR stays closed.
- Carry on. With weather holds possible, keep essentials with you rather than checking a bag.
