October 17, 2026 — Mauritius has extended its overnight curfew for three more nights after a week of unrest over water shortages and the cost of living. The curfew now runs from 10 p.m. to 4:30 a.m. on the nights of Friday, October 16, through Sunday, October 18, ending at 4:30 a.m. on Monday, October 19. The international airport remains open.

What’s happening

  • Curfew: Announced by the Prime Minister’s Office on Friday, October 16. The new hours (10 p.m. to 4:30 a.m.) are shorter than the earlier curfews, which ran from 8:30 p.m. Britain’s Foreign Office says the restrictions cover most of the main island.
  • Cause: Protests over water supply problems and rising prices turned violent after police shot and wounded a 27-year-old woman in Camp Levieux, about 15 km south of Port Louis, on October 9. The officer is in custody. Authorities have reported looting, arson and attacks on police stations.
  • Arrests: A Cabinet update cited by Travel And Tour World reported 151 arrests. AP reports some of those arrested could face charges under the Prevention of Terrorism Act.
  • Other measures: More police deployments, roadblocks and vehicle checkpoints. Fuel sales in portable containers are restricted, though drivers can fill their cars as normal.
  • Situation: Xinhua reports calm has gradually returned to several regions.

Airport

Airports of Mauritius says Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport remains fully operational during the curfew. Departing passengers should arrive at least three hours before their flight, and entry to the check-in hall may be limited to ticketed passengers. It is not clear from the sources whether every airport transfer is allowed to drive during curfew hours, so travelers should confirm pickup times and permission with their hotel or transfer company.

Government advice

The UK Foreign Office updated its advice on October 16, warning of possible road closures and transport disruption and telling visitors to avoid demonstrations and stay indoors during curfew hours. AP reports Canada also urged travelers to avoid demonstrations, and the US Embassy in Port Louis cancelled scheduled services and asked visitors to arrange appointments in advance.

What it means for travelers

  • Flights are operating, but plan airport trips around the curfew. For early-morning departures, arrange your transfer in advance and confirm it is allowed to travel.
  • Arrive at least three hours before departure.
  • Avoid crowds and protests, stay indoors during curfew hours and follow local instructions.
  • Dinners, nightlife and excursions that end after 10 p.m. may need to be moved; check with your hotel or tour operator.
  • US citizens can register with STEP and Canadians with Registration of Canadians Abroad. The curfew could be extended again (TBA), so keep an eye on local news before you travel.
