October 16, 2026 — A new US Mission security alert dated October 15 confirms that Riyadh’s King Khalid International Airport remains suspended through Saturday, October 17, and says US government employees now need special permission to use any airport in Saudi Arabia after missile and drone attacks on airports in the Kingdom.

What’s new

  • Riyadh (King Khalid International): Suspended. The alert says the General Authority of Civil Aviation extended the suspension through October 17. A reopening date has not been announced (TBA).
  • Jeddah and Dammam: King Abdulaziz International (Jeddah) and King Fahd International (Dammam) are operating, with some delays and cancellations.
  • US government staff: Employees need special authorization from the Chief of Mission to use any Saudi airport. They may not travel within 20 miles of the Yemen border, and travel to Jizan, Asir and Najran provinces and to Qatif, Yanbu and Taif needs special approval.
  • Neighboring airports: Airports in Bahrain, Jordan, Oman, Qatar and the UAE (Abu Dhabi, Dubai and Sharjah) were operating; the alert says to confirm with each airport.
  • Ground alternatives: The alert lists Saudi Arabia Railways, SAT Transportation and SAPTCO buses, as well as private car, as alternatives to flying.
  • Photography warning: Saudi Arabia’s Ministry of Interior warns that filming or sharing images of air-defense activity or impact sites can bring legal action. The alert says US citizens have been detained for photographing government buildings, airports and impact sites.
  • Advisory level: The State Department’s Saudi Arabia advisory remains at Level 3 (Reconsider Travel), last issued October 12.

What it means for travelers

  • Do not plan travel to or through Riyadh until the airport reopens. When it does, seats will go first to the passengers whose flights were cancelled.
  • If you must reach Riyadh, the alert’s suggested options are flying to Jeddah or Dammam and continuing by train, bus or car. Expect delays and cancellations at both airports.
  • Do not photograph airports, government buildings or any damage. Keep your phone charged and follow Saudi Civil Defense cellular alerts.
  • US citizens should enroll in STEP; Canadians can use Registration of Canadians Abroad. Check whether your travel insurance excludes conflict-related disruption.
