SYDNEY, Australia — October 16, 2026. Update to our October 15 story. Hundreds of Certis security screeners walked off the job at Sydney Airport on Friday morning as planned, but the airport and Qantas said passenger queues and flights were not delayed.

What changed

  • The morning stoppage went ahead from 6am to 10am on Friday, October 16, according to the Transport Workers’ Union (TWU).
  • Sydney Airport said it had “not experienced any delays this morning” and that queues were managed by extra staff. The airport’s live banner showed domestic T2 and T3 waits under 10 minutes during the stoppage.
  • Qantas reported no impact on flights. As of 9am, more than 80% of Qantas domestic and regional flights and more than 93% of Jetstar domestic flights had left on time. Qantas used extra staff, including Jetstar crew, to help customers change flights.
  • A second stoppage was scheduled for 5pm to 9pm Friday. Its outcome: TBA (not yet reported at the time of writing).
  • No report of a deal from the crisis talks held Thursday, October 15. Further strike dates: TBA.
  • Qantas, Jetstar, Virgin Australia and Rex offered flexibility to customers who wanted to change their travel plans.

Background

The screeners, employed by contractor Certis, want more full-time jobs, fairer rostering and no cuts to part-time hours. They previously struck on September 24, and Certis work safety officers stopped work on October 1.

What it means for travelers

  • Contingency staffing worked this time. The airport’s backup plan kept security lines short on Friday morning, so the strike itself did not drive misconnects.
  • The dispute is not settled. With no deal reported, more stoppages are possible at short notice. Keep an eye on TWU and Sydney Airport announcements before travel through SYD.
  • Allow extra time anyway. On any strike day, arrive early for screening, especially for international departures where missing a flight can mean a long wait for the next one.
  • Waiver rebookings may fill seats. Passengers using the airlines’ flexibility offers could shift onto later flights, which can fill seats on the days that follow.
