October 5, 2026 — American Airlines (AA) has told airport staff that involuntarily bumping a passenger is no longer allowed. Gate agents must keep the aircraft door open, and take a delay if needed, until enough volunteers give up their seats on an oversold flight.

What happened

View from the Wing published details of an internal American memo on October 4, and One Mile at a Time reported the same memo on October 5. The memo describes a “zero involuntary denied boarding mandate” and says avoiding involuntary bumps is now “a company requirement,” not a goal.

According to View from the Wing, the directive has applied since September 30, 2026, to mainline and regional flights, domestic and international. American has not commented publicly; Upgraded Points said it asked the airline for comment and had not heard back.

What the memo tells agents to do

Item New instruction
Aircraft door Stays open until a volunteer is secured for every oversold seat, even if the flight leaves late
Rebooking volunteers A volunteer can be confirmed on the very next departure, even when that flight shows no seats available
Compensation Station leadership, not the Day of Departure desk, decides whether to go above the standard maximum. No new ceiling is published
Supervision A customer service manager or higher must be present at oversold flights
Record-keeping Agents document when they began asking for volunteers, each increase in the offer and any escalation
Effective date September 30, 2026, per View from the Wing. End date: none stated

If the next flight then ends up oversold, View from the Wing says American expects cancellations and missed connections to free seats, and will look for volunteers on that flight too.

Why American is doing it

American bumps far more passengers than its rivals. View from the Wing, citing U.S. Department of Transportation data, says American and its regional partners involuntarily denied boarding to 14,758 passengers in 2025, about 60% of the 24,596 across the U.S. industry. It counts 5,247 at American in the first half of 2026.

Also at American: new snacks in coach

American began replacing its generic pretzels with name-brand snacks in the main cabin on October 1, 2026, View from the Wing reports. Morning flights offer Biscoff cookies or Goldfish. Later flights offer Goldfish, Tate’s chocolate chip cookies or a Peterson’s snack mix. The writer found the choice of snacks roughly doubled the time crews spent serving each row on the flight he observed.

What it means for travelers

  • Expect the next flight to be tighter than it looks. A volunteer moved off an oversold flight can now hold a confirmed seat on the following departure even when it is sold out.
  • Plan for late doors on full flights. Agents are told to hold the door until volunteers are found. A full flight may push back late, which matters if you have a tight connection.
  • Peak days are the risk. Oversales cluster on the busiest flights. Have a backup plan on Sunday evenings, Monday mornings and holiday peaks out of the hubs.
